Teaching STEM the fun way: by tinkering. TASC’s ExpandEd is calling all teacher-tinkerers: make your science-technology-engineering-math curriculum stand out. Workshops will be held at NYSCI this August. Happy tinkering!
This Just in!! All the AWESOMENESS that happened here as part of the Learning Labs Pop-up on Saturday 2/16 as seen through the eyes of Explainer TV.
Mike Wilson and his team of Explainers not only had a cool digital pic station at the Pop-up, but they were running around taking videos and pics of all the happy people. YEAH!!
Maker Space Pop Up was a success! Til we meet again …
Throughout December, NYSCI’s Maker Space will be bustling with “Cardboard Creations.” Using cardboard and tape, design, make and build your own arcade games. This program was inspired by 9-year-old Caine Monroy, who built an elaborate cardboard arcade inside his dad’s used auto parts store. Free with NYSCI admission.

LOOK WHAT’S COMING TO WORLD MAKER FAIRE - Long Island City’s own Circus Warehouse returns for their second Maker Faire, featuring wow-inducing feats of aerial artistry. The Warehouse is NYC’s only professional-level circus training facility with a faculty that includes circus legends, Oympic athletes, Broadway veterans and prime movers of the Nouveau Cirque community. At Maker Faire, you can watch… and maybe even try a few flips of your own (no previous flying experience necessary.)
LOOK WHAT’S COMING TO WORLD MAKER FAIRE - The Power Racing Series makes its NYC debut at NYSCI, with teams from across the country racing power wheels cars that they’ve stripped down and rebuilt using open source technology and tools. The catch? The budget for the build can’t exceed $500.
Like all great Maker projects, it’s wild and it’s educational. Encouraging people to try something new and making engineering accessible to kids and grown-ups alike, the Power Racing Series is just one of more than 400 projects, presentations and participatory activities happening at World Maker Faire at NYSCI on September 29-30.
LOOK WHAT’S COMING TO WORLD MAKER FAIRE - Hand-painted, utilitarian, durable, individualized. Belle Helmets have as much character as the cyclists who don them.

Today, NYSCI helped our friends at Make launch Maker Camp on Google+. Thirty projects in 30 days started today with rocket-launching experiments led by Rick Schertle and our own Senior Explainer, Jessica.
Maker Camp is a virtual summer camp for teens everywhere. The projects show kids how to build, experiment and get creative. Watch for a new project each weekday morning, followed a hangout on Google+ with a guest camp counselor in the afternoon. Summer’s almost over. Time to get making.
Making Music with Garbage
Get ready for the Garbage-Men, a group of 10th graders who perform music on instruments made from recycled materials like cereal boxes, PVC pipes, and even a saxophone made from a Fisher-Price corn popper toy. The Garbage-Men are performing live throughout NYC this weekend, including two shows at NYSCI on Saturday at 1 and 3 pm.
