Let NYSCI Explainers show you how to do the Harlem Shake. Love!
On Monday (Presidents Day) the library hosted author and Channel 7 Weather Man, Bill Evans. He wrote a book about weather, It’s Raining Fish & Spiders. His book sold out in 5 minutes.
For the 2:30 show, over 250 people enjoyed Mr. Evan’s discussion and slides about weather and his book. We learned a lot about meteorology.
Bill generously took time to pose with his fans (including your librarian!).
Now that’s a packed science library!
Pop-Up STEM Party

When the urge hits to hack, remix, design and make, New York City teens can visit a special pop-up at NYSCI this Saturday. The Learning Labs Pop-Up introduces teens to web design, digital photography, 3D printing, computer animation, sound recording and more in a free workshop made possible by a grant from the Institute of Museum Library and Services.
Approximately 50 teens are expected to attend this Saturday’s event. Activity highlights include a Mozilla web maker session by Hive NYC, digital beat making by World Up, and 3D printing by Pixel Academy. With games, food and prizes, the event will feel more like a party than a science lab.
Saturday’s Pop-Up Learning Labs will run from 1 – 4 pm, with another one planned for April 13. Pop on by!
Bearded dragon is a common name for lizards belonging to genus Pogona. Native to Australia, they are often found basking on rocks and branches during mornings and afternoons.
NYSCI’s bearded dragon here in picture loves interacting and is definitely not camera shy.
If you would love to see pictures of our bearded dragon more frequently, like or re-blog this post.

NYSCI’s star photographer Andrew Kelly put this little slide show of photo’s from ReMake the Holidays’ SOUND activities, and activated it with Ben Garthus’ Recycled Percussion rhythms. We’re so happy these events not only inspire our participants, but also our photographer. Thanks Andrew!
Be a part of history on January 12 as Scott Kildall’s Time Capsule is buried in NYSCI’s Rocket Park as part of Get Involved (Part 2), a focus on ReGeneration artists and projects that are on exhibit at NYSCI through January 13.
Scott’s project Imagine 2049 is a community-generated time capsule filled with ideas for a better, more sustainable society.
Other workshops during the day include Biomodd’s Recycled Energy: make a USB solar charger that charges everyday electronic devices; and Shih Chieh Huang’s Inflatables: build a giant inflatable structure using found and recycled materials.
Thank you Bruce Goldstone!
Author Bruce Goldstone visited the Science Technology Library and read from his book GREAT ESTIMATIONS on Saturday December 29th. The crowd enjoyed learning about strategies for estimating huge numbers of cherries, paper clips, rubber duckies and more. Bruce had them thinking about numbers and having fun.
Fans were able to purchase signed copies of the book. Thanks to our gift shop for setting up operations in our library. Of course it SOLD OUT.
His next book is on PROBABILITY and he is currently working on one about VISUAL PATTERNS. We hope that Bruce comes back to teach and read to us about those fascinating subjects.
More info about Bruce at his website.
Many thanks to our Library volunteers, Betty, Ava and Kristin for making both sessions run smoothly.
Remake The Holidays - Light -, a set on Flickr.
LIGHT: First day of ReMake the Holidays. Photo’s by Andrew Kelly.“With its cards, wrapping, decorations, boxes and cut trees, Christmas often devolves from a time of joy into a time of junk. The New York Hall of Science has an annual solution: ReMake the Holidays, which pairs young visitors with artists and educators to turn trash into treasure.”
Biomodd’s Spongebot is a recent addition to their installation at NYSCI. Come see Biomodd as part of NYSCI’s exhibition ReGeneration, on through Jan 13.
