Congrats and thanks to the cast and crew from USA’s White Collar. They were at NYSCI the past few days filming an episode that will air later this season. In between scenes, they indulged in a little summer fun at NYSCI.  Here’s Tim DeKay and Tiffani Thiessen with some of our Explainers during a break in filming in our Great Hall. So now’s the time to tune in, download, and get caught up before the NYSCI episode airs…

Science in Your Pocket

Want to learn about molecules? Understand extremophiles? There’s an app for that!

NYSCI Explainers have just had their first apps developed as part of Explainers As Designers. The project is a variation on Iridescent’s Technovation Challenge, with teams of Explainers learning the ins and outs of app development while also getting some baseline knowledge of what it takes to successfully bring an app to market. Two apps — Bio-Hatcher and Molecule Rush — were selected as winners and have just been made available for download in both the iTunes and Google Play stores.

“I wouldn’t have thought of trying to program anything prior to taking part in the Explainers as Designers Program, said Jacqueline, a member of the winning team.

Each app builds on content found at NYSCI exhibits and adds yet another interactive component to the exhibit experience, in the form of games you can play anywhere anytime. It’s a bit of NYSCI in your pocket.

Today, NYSCI helped our friends at Make launch Maker Camp on Google+. Thirty projects in 30 days started today with rocket-launching experiments led by Rick Schertle and our own Senior Explainer, Jessica.

Maker Camp is a virtual summer camp for teens everywhere. The projects show kids how to build, experiment and get creative. Watch for a new project each weekday morning, followed a hangout on Google+ with a guest camp counselor in the afternoon. Summer’s almost over.  Time to get making.

Sometimes the best parts of science are gross and icky.
Our Explainer Anias is about to dissect this cow’s eye and explain to visitors its similarities to the human eye.

I recently interviewed Pre School Place resident and avid drummer, Chantel Chambers, on the most memorable experience she’s had working at the Hall of Science.

Chantel: It’s hard to pick (a most memorable one) because there are so many! (laughs) Oh I know! The time I got to feed the spiders. I…

Did you know that High Five Day is coming up?

At Explainer TV we decided to make a special high five video. By using our Bullet Time Animation exhibit, we turned an awesome high five into an epic high five.

If you have seen movies like The Matrix or Max Payne then you have seen bullet time in action. It involves several high speed cameras, each positioned at a different angle, that take quick shots of the action.

In our case the action was the mid air high five. After the pictures are taken, a computer puts the images into sequence. This allows us to see relatively fast camera movement for a super slow motion or freeze frame action.

There you have it. Bullet Time.

Hey teachers, this is a great experiment to share in the classroom!
With some creativity, alcohol, & spark, we can launch an ordinary soda bottle into the air.
