Be a part of history on January 12 as Scott Kildall’s Time Capsule is buried in NYSCI’s Rocket Park as part of Get Involved (Part 2), a focus on ReGeneration artists and projects that are on exhibit at NYSCI through January 13.
Scott’s project Imagine 2049 is a community-generated time capsule filled with ideas for a better, more sustainable society.
Other workshops during the day include Biomodd’s Recycled Energy: make a USB solar charger that charges everyday electronic devices; and Shih Chieh Huang’s Inflatables: build a giant inflatable structure using found and recycled materials.

Thank you Bruce Goldstone!

Author Bruce Goldstone visited the Science Technology Library and read from his book GREAT ESTIMATIONS on Saturday December 29th.  The crowd enjoyed learning about strategies for estimating huge numbers of cherries, paper clips, rubber duckies and more.  Bruce had them thinking about numbers and having fun.

Fans were able to purchase signed copies of the book.  Thanks to our gift shop for setting up operations in our library.  Of course it SOLD OUT.

His next book is on PROBABILITY and he is currently working on one about VISUAL PATTERNS.  We hope that Bruce comes back to teach and read to us about those fascinating subjects.

More info about Bruce at his website.

Many thanks to our Library volunteers, Betty, Ava and Kristin for making both sessions run smoothly.

“With its cards, wrapping, decorations, boxes and cut trees, Christmas often devolves from a time of joy into a time of junk. The New York Hall of Science has an annual solution: ReMake the Holidays, which pairs young visitors with artists and educators to turn trash into treasure.”

Biomodd’s Spongebot is a recent addition to their installation at NYSCI. Come see Biomodd as part of NYSCI’s exhibition ReGeneration, on through Jan 13.

December 27 – 30, 2012; noon – 4 pm

Bend, twist, light, sculpt and taste a new version of the holiday season. Workshops, demos, artist installations and food science explorations will present a wide variety of ways to engage and leave your mark on the holidays at NYSCI. Each day of ReMake the Holidays will focus on a different theme. Most activities are free with NYSCI admission. Some projects require a small materials fee.

New York Hall of Science Evening of Science and Inspiration

“One of my science teachers was an explainer. She used to tell me her stories,” Taveras said. “I wanted to see what it was like to interact with people on a daily basis.”

Throughout December, NYSCI’s Maker Space will be bustling with “Cardboard Creations.” Using cardboard and tape, design, make and build your own arcade games. This program was inspired by 9-year-old Caine Monroy, who built an elaborate cardboard arcade inside his dad’s used auto parts store. Free with NYSCI admission.

Have you ever noticed that people use the terms Theory and Hypothesis interchangeably? Most people say they have a Theory. They really mean that they have a Hypothesis.

My latest Science Music Video sheds some lyrical light on the situation.
